While the Northwest region of Bolivia is for the most part safe, there are some general guidelines that you should follow, specifically with regard to the popular activities of climbing and hiking in this region. If you are hiking or climbing it is safer to go with a guide. Be aware that there have been some reports of robberies on some of the trails. This part of the country is very remote, and services are few and far between, so you should know that if you have an accident you may be waiting a long while for help. If you start to suffer from altitude sickness you should head to a lower elevation.
