Cala Cala is an Aymaran word meaning ¨place full of stones.¨ Cala Cala is located 21 kilometers (13 mi) southeast of Oruro and is thought to be where the first human settlements were made. Colorful rock paintings are found 2.5 kilometers (1.6 mi) outside the village of Cala Cala. The rock paintings depict human and Bolivian animal figures and are thought to be thousands of years old. From the high altitude of 3048 meters (10,000 ft), the views of the area are spectactular and on September 14, the Lord of the Lakes festival (Exaltacion de Santa Cruz) takes place.
