Museo Sacro, Folkl贸rico, Arqueol贸gico y Minero - Museum Oruro - Bolivia

The Museo Sacro, Folkl贸rico, Arqueol贸gico y Minero is a definitely worth a visit if you鈥檙e hanging around Oruro. Attached to the Sanctuario de Savac贸n, it has both above-ground and below-ground sections. Depending on when you get there, guided tours (in Spanish), which are included in the price of the ticket, will either lead you down to an abandoned mine that has been converted into a show-and-tell of sorts, or upstairs to the small religious, cultural, and archeological museum.

The mine showcases old tools, dynamite and detailed mining processes, as well as two examples of Tio, the satanic guardian to whom miners make small sacrifices (cigarettes, alcohol, coca leaves) in exchange for protection. The upstairs museum is a standard exhibition of statues, artwork and even some fossils-- the most interesting part is the display of elaborate Carnaval costumes. Also, there is a bookstore and giftshop on the first floor, attached to the Sanctuary.
