Crossing to Chile

Crossing to Chile:

By Bus

The bus terminal in Oruro is located at Calle Bakovic and Avenida Aroma, about 10 blocks northeast of the city center. Ticket sales and information office are upstairs in the terminal building and are open daily from 8 a.m.-10 p.m. Almost all long distance buses arrive and depart from the Oruro bus terminal. There are multiple daily services to Arica, Chile ($10-12, eight to 10 hours), via Tambo Quemado and Chungará. There are also several bus services ($10-14, 12-14 hours) via the Pisiga border crossing.

By Train

Since Oruro was once a great mining town, trains are efficient and plentiful. The trains are run by Chilean company Empresa Ferroviaria Andina S.A. (http://www.fca.com.bo). Currently, the company only sells train tickets the day before or on the day of travel.

Hours of operation are:

Monday - 8am-11:30am and 2pm-6pm

Tuesday - 8am-6pm, no lunch break

Wednesday - 8am-noon and 2:30pm-6:30pm

Thursday- 8am-11:30am and 2:30pm-6pm

Friday - 8am-6pm, no lunch break

Saturday – Closed

Sunday - 8am-11am and 3pm-6:30pm

To get to Charana on the Chilean border, take the train from Oruro to Soledad and then switch trains for one going to Charana.

To get to Est. Avaroa on the Chilean border, take the train from Oruro to Rio Mulatos and switch trains to one heading for Est. Avaroa.
