This 247,000 hectare reserve was created in 1989 and mainly consists of dense cloud forests that exist on the eastern side of the mountains in this region. The variety of wildlife here is stunning—including spectacled bears, jaguars, tapirs, and hundreds of different bird species.
To see the reserve, you have to be willing to hike in. This is best done between May and September, when it is dryer, and a guide can help improve your experience. To make the trip, contact PROMETA (Protection del Medio Ambiente Tarija) at their offices at Calle Alejandro del Carpio in Tarija, Tel: 663-3873.
