Considered the main town in the desolate area of Southwest Bolivia, Uyuni is a launching pad for multi-day overland trips to the Salares, or salt flats.
Despite its cold temperatures and isolated feel, Uyuni is nonetheless a traveler's hub, and not a bad spot to hang around for a day before going on a tour of the Southwestern Circuit or after you've come back and are figuring out your next move.
Uyuni has one of the better tourism offices in Bolivia, offering detailed and up-to-date info about the salt flats and other destinations around Bolivia, so consider making a stop at the office on your way to one of Uyuni's cozy pizzerias.
Also of interest around Uyuni is a strange, neglected train cemetery that dates back to 1940, when Uyuni's mining industry began to shut down. Many Southwestern Circuit tours make a stop here before heading towards the flats.
