Just over 20 kilometers (12.5 mi) west of Padcaya, you’ll find the small settlement of Chaguaya. Once a year this sleepy little town turns into the center of national celebrations for La Fiesta de la Virgen de Chaguaya, beginning on the 15th August and lasting until the 15th September.
Thousands of pilgrams make the 60 kilometer (37 mi) trek from Tarija to Chaguaya to give thanks to the virgin. Tents are pitched all over town and people celebrate by eating chirriadsas (honey tortillas) and drinking sugar cane juice.
Situated on the Río Camacho, there are a number of strolls you can take from the village along the river. Out of festival time, you can normally rent a room in a local’s house.
Buses from Tarija leave from the Parada del Chaco on a regular basis ($0.75), or head to Padcaya and get transport from there.
