The Basílica San Francisco was built in 1606 and is the oldest church in town - try and go inside to see the beautiful oil paintings (there is mass most evenings). The museum is housed in the college next door and houses a collection of baroque artwork that has been donated to the convent over the years. There are also displays of large wooden alters, hand-embroided robes from the 18th century, a printing press from the early 20th century and a number of 18th and 19th century books and studies.
The pièce de résistance is an impressive library containing over 15,000 books, but you’ll need special permission to visit it.
