Getting To and Away From Tarija

Bus

The bus station (Tel: 591-4-66-36508) is to the east of the town center, on Avenida Las Américas. It’s quite basic but there are food stalls and toilets. Scores of different bus companies provide long and short distance services around the country. To get to the town center, you can easily get a bus ($0.20) or taxi ($0.70), or it’s about half an hour on foot, if you want to walk.

To La Paz: With Sama at 7.30am, with Tarija at 8.00am and with San Roque at 5.00pm (via Potosí and Oruro). Departures leave every day ($15, journey time 24 hours).

To Oruro: With Sama and Copa Moya at 7.00am, with San Lorenzo and Copa Moya at 5.00pm and with Tarija at 6pm ($13.50). The journey takes 20 hours and buses leave every day.

There are services leaving throughout the day, every day, to Bermejo ($3, 4 hours). A quicker option is take a trufi or shared taxi (La Veloz, El Fronteriz, 4 de Julio, 15 de Abril), which leave from the bus station when full ($5.50, 3 hours).

Several companies have services to Yacuiba at 7.30 p.m. ($5.50), to Villamontes between 6 – 6.30 p.m. ($7, 12 hours), and to Villazon between 8 – 8.30 p.m. ($5) on Monday and Thursday. Buses leave for Tupiza on Monday and Thursday at 7.30 p.m. and 8.30 p.m. ($8, 8 - 10 hours).

International Services

There are buses heading for Salta in Argentina every day, every couple of hours, from around 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. (there are normally a few additional services leaving in the early hours). You might have to change buses and/or wait a few hours in Aguas Blancas—check before you buy your ticket. Journey time is around 10 hours (price $17 - $19).

A more convenient option to Salta is the Dragon Roja transport service (Calle Sucre 235, Tel: 591-4-66-65014, Cell: 591-7717-6580) who run cars three times a week to and from Salta. The price is around $30.

Services to Buenos Aires and other Argentine cities normally run on a regular basis. If not, you can always pick up transport to Buenos Aires in Aguas Blancas or change in Salta.

Air

The airport (Tel: 591-4-66-42283) is about 3 kilometers (1.86 mi) east of town just off Avenida Las Americas. A taxi into town will cost you around $2, or you can walk out and cross the main road and get a micro or trufi into the center (marked Mercado Central).

TAM (Calle La Madrid 470 between Calles Gral. Trigo and Campero, Tel: 591-4- 664-2734) has flights several times a week to Santa Cruz, La Paz, Sucre, Cochabamba and Yacuiba. AeroSur (Calle 15 de Abril, entre Calles Campos and Colon, Tel: 591-4-66-34554) has flights six times a week to Santa Cruz, La Paz and Sucre, and regular flights to Cochabamba. Aerocon ( Avenida Belgrano on corner of Calle D’Arlach, Tel: 591-4-66-67969, Cel: 591-7298-8991) has regular flights to Santa Cruz.
