If you ask how to get to Tarija at the tourist information in Salta, they’re likely to send you on a wild goose chase across the border at La Quiaca to Villazon, from where you’ll still have a hellish journey on a bad road before you get to Tarija. Don’t listen to them! The easiest way to get to Tarija is on the direct, asphalted road that runs through Bermejo. There’s a Bolivian transport company called Red Dragon (see Getting To and Away From Tarija) who will take you by car for about $30, or there are direct buses that also run the route. If not, you can easily get transport to the border and pick up a bus on the other side. There are even collective taxis that run from the Argentine side of the border to the next large town, Oran.
