You should exercise the same safety precautions in Tarija as you would anywhere – keep an eye on your valuables, don’t walk down empty streets late at night. Tarija has so far escaped the increase in violent crime that has occurred in other parts of Bolivia, the most dangerous thing you’re likely to encounter is the bus ride to or from Potosí.
