Tarija has an enviable climate, with an average temperature of between 19 and 20°C. This “eternal spring” means you can visit comfortably at any time of year, but the best time to come is probably between January and March/April. This is when all the grape-vines are in full bloom and the countryside is at its prettiest.
If you time your visit carefully you could also be here for Carnival season (January – February), which lasts for a good month here in Tarija. The main events are the celebrations of compadres and comadres and the colorful parades and festivities of Carnival Sunday and Monday. The festival of San Roque, in September, is spectacular and is another great time to be in the city.
Saying that, there are festivals all year round in Tarija, so it’s quite likely you’ll come across some kind of celebration. If you’re here in winter, this is the best time to head to the Andes region and the Camino del Inca.
