The small town of Tomatitas, five kilometers (31.mi) from Tarija on the way to San Lorenzo, is a great place to come and have lunch on the weekend. Cabañas with patios and gardens line the road serving up a mix of traditional Tarijan dishes like sopa de maní, picante de galina, cangrejos, sabalo and saice. Coming from Tarija, most of the restaurants are at the far end of the town, on the western side of the main street. To get there take a minibus from the corner of Calle Domingo Paz and Calle J.M. Saracho ($0.20).
From Tomatitas, you can also visit Coimata Falls. The route includes a walk through beautiful countryside past sheer rock faces, and makes a good excursion. The easiest way is to take a taxi to the cascadas (waterfalls). You will get dropped off on a cobbled track next to the river. Keep following this trail, first upwards, then past a hippie commune, then down to a small waterfall and swimming hole. From here keep following the track for about 30/40 minutes until you reach the main falls. To return, follow the same route. You might want to arrange a set time for the taxi driver to pick you up, chance hitching a lift, or walk back.
You can also walk all the way to the first swimming hole - the road to Coimata in Tomatitas is about 300 meters (less than 100 ft) along the main road, on the left hand side when coming from Tarija. Turn left at the football field in Coimata after walking for about an hour and a half.
