Accommodation options in the Southwest have improved in the last few years, with more comfortable hotels now being available in the Salar de Uyuni and other venues across the region. That said, there are still limited midrange options and very few luxury hotels in the towns and cities, and on most tours of the Salar de Uyuni the accommodation is very basic. The exception is Tarija, where a thriving business market means lots of luxury and midrange options. In Uyuni and Tupiza, you’ll find plenty of accommodation specifically targeted at foreign tourists. In many settlements across the Southwest, the majority of hotels are functional alojamientos and residenciales of varying quality.
One word of warning, most hotels don’t have heating, so be sure to come prepared. You should book ahead for Carnival in Oruro and in the high season in Uyuni.
