One of Bolivia’s biggest tourist attractions, Salar de Uyuni, is found in the Southwest, and safety should be a big factor when choosing your tour agency. Ask around to find a reputable company and be sure to quiz them about safety measures.

The towns and settlements across the Southwest are regarded as pretty safe, but keep an eye on your belongings, especially at transport hubs, and be cautious walking around after dark. If you’re heading for Carnival in Oruro, hold onto your camera tight and don’t take any other valuables with you – pick pocketing is rife.

If you´re planning on going trekking in remote areas, or are visiting the salt flats, be sure to come equipped to face all elements. Bring a sleeping bag, sunscreen, drinking water and clothing for all conditions.
