The landscape around Tupiza is red and rocky; it is a wilderness filled with elongated rock formations, cacti which have grown tall over time and wide, dry riverbeds. Just as much as the quaint and quiet town is reminiscent of the wild west, Tupiza’s outlying scenery evokes the same wonder of days long gone and a wild left to explore. Perfect for half-, full- and multi-day treks, either on foot or horseback, the routes along the thirsty quebradas can be followed with or without a guide, though maps and plenty of water water are essential either way.
If you want to hear a bit of history, or to set up something to bring you around, almost all the Tupiza tour agencies run jeep and horseback tours to the surrounding area. You can also hire a taxi for the excursion, it costs about $1 (6 Bs.) per person, per hour. Note, however, that they usually won’t leave unless the car is full.
