Walking to the red rock formations of El Cañón from Tupiza’s city center is a short stroll, probably two or so hours roundtrip, longer if you wish to linger. To get there, head west on Calle Chuquisaca, past the military barracks and then curve right with the road/parking lot at the fútbol field. Keep heading north until you get onto the sandy quebrada which runs parallel to the towering red mountain wall. Along the way you may see local folk panning for rocks, as the area is rich in useful building materials, and from the spot just before you climb up into El Cañón, the long ridge of red mountains that surround Tupiza is exquisitely visible.
El Cañón itself is walkable maze of rock walls, with small caves and crevices shaping the formations along the small riverbed. It’s about two and a half kilometers deep, however locals say you can wander on and on. If you’re prepared for the elements, consider making it into a full-day hike or overnight camp. Be sure to pack plenty of water and warm protection, as it’s dry in the day and cold, cold, cold at night.
