Getting To and Away From Villazón

Villazón is well connected to towns and cities all over Bolivia. As well as the buses that regularly head north, Villazón is served by almost daily trains, as it is the last stop on the train line that runs north / south across the country connecting this border town with Tupiza, Atocha, Uyuni and Oruro. The bus and train stations are both situated on the main street a 15 and 25 minute walk, respectively, from the border. If you don't want to walk, taxis are always available and happy to drive you (expect to pay between $1 - 2).

By Bus
Several companies run daily bus services that leave Villazón around 8 a.m. and between 5 and 6 p.m. to Tupiza (2.5 hours / 15 Bs.), Potosí (12 hours / $6 / 40 Bs.), Oruro (15 hours / $7.15 / 50 Bs.) and as far as La Paz (18 hours / $7.85 / 55Bs.), stopping at destinations along the way (almost all services stop in Tupiza). As well as these early morning and late afternoon departures there are some other services throughout the day, only on company (Cruz del Sur 20 de Mayo) runs a daily service to Cochabamba (18 hours / $11.50 / 80 Bs.).

Buses To Argentina
Many bus companies have offices around the bus terminal offering services to destinations throughout Argentina, however, all but one bus to Buenos Aires (Potosí Buses, Tel: 591-2-596-5335) leave from the terminal in La Quiaca, so you're best of heading there to buy your ticket.

By Train
Villazón's small clean well organized train station (Tel: 591-2-694-2565) is open daily, except on Sunday, between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. with longer opening hours on Tuesdays and Fridays (until 6 p.m. but with a two and a half hour lunch between mid-day and 2:30 p.m.). The Expreso del Sur service leaves Villazón heading north on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 3:30 p.m. arriving in Tupiza at 6:15 p.m., Atocha at 9:35 p.m., Uyuni at 11:50 p.m. and its final destination of Oruro the next day at 7 a.m. The cheaper and slightly slower, backpacker favorite, Wara Wara del Sur service runs on Mondays and Thursdays also departing at 3:30 p.m. arriving in destinations just slightly after the times listed above. For complete train times of both services, and prices of the different tickets available consult the full train timetable.
