Copacabana, Ipanema

By Alexandra Fjereide

If you’re young hipster, got a good beach body, and want to show it off, Ipanema should be your top destination in Brazil.

The area gained international fame after Antonio Carlos Jobim’s catchy song, Girl from Ipanema, which reached the U.S top 5 in the summer of 1964.

The Travel Channel listed Ipanema as the sexiest beach on the planet, and it’s easy to understand why. Along the miles of white sand you’ll come across men and woman all dressed in ridiculously small swimsuits, making it clear as dawn why the popular hair due, Brazilian, originated from these parts.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Ipanema is that the beach itself is divided into areas of interest, both socially and physically. The area near Rua Farme de Amoedo is known as the Gay Beach, and the gay friendly atmosphere is impossible to miss. Even if you have absolutely no antennas for that sort of thing, the rainbow flag waiving in the wind, will probably give it away.

Another hot-spot not to be missed is the stretch called Pasto Nove, after the ninth lifeguard tower. This is where you’ll find the fit, beautiful beach-bunnies, all brilliant examples of why Brazil has got a good reputation for its looks.

You might find it a bit intimidating showing up with muffin-cups, and an out-of-season bikini, but thank goodness there’s no audition for a spot in the sun! If you’re brave enough to join the crown, do it! Buy an ice-cold beer from one of the guys selling it along the beach, and enjoy the view. Ipanema is Rio at its wildest, tastiest, and sexiest!
