Built in 1931 and situated at the top of the Corcovado peak, the pristine, looming statue of Christ the Redeemer (O Cristo Redentor) keeps watch over the city of Rio, arms mightily outstretched.
This well known statue, named one of the new seven wonders of the world, is a symbol of Rio, the City of God, and the spirit of the Brazilian people, who welcome visitors with open arms.
Though you will have to elbow your way through throngs of tourists to get a glimpse of the breathtaking Cidade de Deus below the 100-foot statue, on a clear day, the enchanting city of Rio seems to twinkle and shine just for you.
Mass is held in a small chapel in the cross-shaped statue´s pedestal on Sundays. Baptisms and weddings also take place there.
Visiting the Corcovado and Christ the Redeemer is a must if you have some time in Rio, and can manage to peel yourself off the beach either quite early in the day, or in time for an unforgettable sunset.

Getting There
The best way to reach the corcovado is by taxi. Make sure to go in a group, as taxi drivers often hike up the price. Once the taxi drops you off, you can reach the Redeemer either by a series of escalators and elevators, or walking up 222 steps.
Travel Tips: As with all tourist attractions, beware of tour guides and taxi drivers trying to take you for a ride.
