Rising to 1,300 feet, Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar) is the best and most famous spot to take in breathtaking panoramic vistas of the city of Rio, from Copacabana beach to the Corcovado Mountain, and the Atlantic Ocean that surrounds.
To ascend to the top, take a ride in a 75-person cable-car, installed in 1912, which makes two stops. The first stop is at Urca Hill, a lesser peak, which houses a restaurant and children´s play area, and the second stop continues to the top, where photographers can spend hours watching the sunlight change over enchanted Rio de Janeiro.
Intrepid travelers can bypass the cable-car and embark upon the rugged and difficult hike which leads to the top. If you would like to take the cable car back down, be sure to buy a ticket at the base before you begin your climb-- tickets can only be bought on the ground.
