Market in São Paulo

By Leslie Brown

São Paulo isn’t the most touristic city. However, don’t let this turn you off from exploring this impressive business metropolis. The museums, restaurants, parks and lively bars may be more representative of Brazil than Rio’s half-day adventure excursions.

The Jardins area attracts restaurant goers and boutique shoppers, alike. Even if you don’t feel like dishing out cash at one of the chic shops, walking around the area is well worth the taxi fare to arrive in Jardins.

Aside from admiring the unusual architecture of buildings such as Casa Das Rosas and the Banespa Building, which was fashioned after the New York Empire State Building, you can shop at the markets. The Mercado Municipal offers an incredible variety of fruits and handicrafts. At night, go out to one of the many bars such as Blen Blen Brasil, a club with both live acts and DJ-orchestrated music, or Pirajá, a bar with lots of seating, endless beer and delicious food.

To escape São Paulo’s massive spread, head to one of the parks tucked between busy streets. Rent a bike by the hour or go jogging on the paths in Parque Ibirapuera. Don’t worry about your iPod’s safety as you trot by the lakes and streams that run through the green expanse — this is a common and secure hangout area. In São Paulo Parque Trianon enjoy a stroll though patches of forest or haggle with vendors at the local artisan fair. Known for its vintage clothing and Brazilian handicrafts, the market can make for an interesting walk on your way to the Museu Arte São Paulo, located on the same street. As with any city park, be wary of pickpockets and don’t cut through the lawn at night, as the areas can be dangerous.
