Southeastern Brazil Overview

+ Add a Photo

By Christopher Minster

The southeastern region of Brazil is known for enormous cities, good beaches, and a good deal of fascinating history.  The region is comprised of four states: Espíritu Santo, Minas Gerais, São Paulo, and Rio de Janeiro

The capital city of Minas Gerais is Ouro Preto.  A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ouro Preto was founded in 1698.  Not long after, the region experienced a gold and silver rush and the city has never looked back.  Flush with new wealth, the citizens of Ouro Preto built magnificent homes and buildings.  In 1790, Brazil’s first independence movement was quashed in Ouro Preto (Brazil finally won independence in 1823).  Today, the city is known for its baroque churches and other restored buildings.
