Approximately 92km south of Lota, above the Río Tucapel, is the agricultural town of Cañete, site of a famous battle between the indigenous and the Spanish in the 16th century and still today a Mapuche stronghold. Meander to the northern end of the main street to visit Fuerte Tucapel, the remains of the town's fortifications, and find the best views of the river valley. Slightly south of the town, there is an exhibition of indigenous funerary customs, musical instruments, jewelry and weapons at the Museo Mapuche de Cañete.
