A relatively easy and quick day-trip from Concepción is to the former coal mining town of Lota. It is one of the poorer cities in Chile, though Lota is beginning to tap into the tourism industry. There are more modern hotels, a casino and, of course, visits to the coal mine complete with an ex-miner as a guide. Those curious to experience a miner’s life can explore the 820-meter shaft of Chiflón del Diablo ($CH4,000) or embark 1,500 meters below surface and ride on a mine train in the Pique Carlos ($CH6,000). There is also a museum to view mining equipment and tools after emerging from the tunnels. Lota’s coal-mining history is reinforced in the center of town where there is a statue of the Virgen carved out of coal in the church on the plaza. A bit to the west is pleasant Parque de Lota, which has a garden, colonial homes and a museum.
