When to go

By far the biggest show in town is the Campeonato Nacional de Rodeo, which occurs annually in early fall (late March to early April). Book ahead if you are planning to stay here around this engrossing huaso (cowboy) festival. Celebrations marking Chile's independence occur in September, and the Encuentro Criollo folklore festival happens in November. The lifts at nearby Chapa Verde are open from mid-June to mid-October and draw skiiers and snowboardings looking to avoid the crush of bodies common to the central region's more popular slopes.
