Wineries - Other Activity Talca - Chile

Ruta del Vino del Maule

Wine connoisseurs will be delighted because there are 15 wineries open to the public within close proximity to Talca. Tours of these wineries, as well as local vineyards, have been dubbed the Ruta del Vino del Maule - there is additional information available at the Sernatur in Talca. Since most are not open to visitors who only want to pop in, it is necessary to make prior arrangements. This can be done by contacting the Ruta del Vino del Maule at Villa Cultural Huiquilemu (Tel: 73-246460, URL: www.valledelmaule.cl).

Viña Balduzzi, which is in San Javier, is a recommended visit. The staff offers tours ($5) of its bodegas, taking guests through the wine-making process and offer tastings. And, not surprisingly, there is the chance to purchase its wines - a nice option since most are produced for export. With its 200 acres of vineyards and charming grounds that feature a chapel and park full of trees such as the American Oak, European Oak, Imalaya’s Cedro, Libano’s Cedro and Araucaria Angustifolia from South America, Viña Balduzzi is the romantic image that wine lovers imagine when their thoughts drift to a Central Valley winery. (Av. Balmaceda 1189, San Javier, Monday - Saturday 9 a.m.-6 p.m., Tel: 73-322138, www.balduzzi.cl).

Viñas Calina is closer to Talca and is in business with California-based Kendall-Jackson. The wine is top-shelf and produced with state-of-the-art technology. Tours cost approximately $7 at this winery. (Fundo El Maitén, Camino Las Rastras, Tel: 71-263126, www.calina.com).

Casa Donoso’s focus is fine cabernet sauvignon, merlot and chardonnay, and since the place has been upgraded it boasts a restaurant and guesthouse. This is the closest winery to the center of Talca. Tours that include wine tasting ($5) are available from 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Monday - Saturday. Reservations are needed for Casa Donoso’s restaurant which has good food, and as one would assume, a nice selection of wine. (Tel: 71-242506, www.casadonoso.com).
