The hill received its name when Ambrosio O’Higgins (whose name you’ll see on the street signs of every Chilean city) was awarded the title of Barón de Vallenary. This mostly residential cerro (hill) near Muelle Barón makes for some lovely walks, but be alert to your surroundings this area is outside the part of town visited by many tourists, and you won’t find much in the way of accommodation or restaurants. The nearby Ascensor Polanco on Cerro Polanco is the most famous of the city’s elevators and is definitely worth a visit.
If you’re daring, take a walk down the Paseo Muelle Barón and look to your right for a small opening in a chain-link fence. In a few steps, you’ll find yourself in an abandoned, burned out train station with two ghostly trains covered in graffiti, awaiting a departure that will never come. Near this pier you’ll also find several markets, including the sizable antique feria on Saturdays in Plaza O’Higgins and the frenetic Wednesday and Saturday farmer’s market (located on Av. Argentina near the National Congress building).
