On Wednesdays and Saturdays, a huge outdoor farmer's market of fruits and vegetables opens early in the morning to sell all kinds of local produce dirt-cheap. Here you can get a kilo of kiwi for CLP 200 (US$0.40) or a big chunk of sweet potato for next to nothing. But the long walk down the colorful gauntlet full of vendors asking you to try their oranges or olives or sweet dried fruits is enjoyable on its own. Be careful with your camera or handbag when strolling through the market as it is notorious for petty theft.
