Valparaíso has a reputation for being one of the most dangerous cities in Chile. While it’s true that there’s a large economic disparity, if you’re careful and aware of your surroundings and are discreet with your belongings, you likely won’t have a problem. Locals will warn you not to go into the old historic part of town alone (between Plaza Sotomayor and Cerro Artilleria), and never to go at night. Though their cautionary words may be a bit over-exaggerated, you probably shouldn’t choose a hostel or hotel located in this section, as there are many accommodation options available in other parts of town.
One thing that hostellers should be aware of is a trend that’s recently arrived to Valparaíso: a person posing as a potential guest will ask to see a room, and when the hostel staffer isn’t looking, will snatch whatever’s in sight and stick it in their bag. It’s therefore best in Valparaíso, as in any town, to keep your valuables locked up and to put all of your belongings in your pack when you go out for the day.
