One of many coastal resort villages, Cachagua is best known for its community of penguins. Between 1,000 and 2,000 Magelland and Humboldt penguins inhabit the protected Monumento Natural Isla Cachagua (Isla de los Pingüinos), a desolate rock off the west end of the beach. Surfers flock to Cachagua's waves, and there is good fishing and horseback riding opportunities. Restaurants front the town's beach, while a more secluded stretch of sand, Playa las Cujas, is just a short hike away. The town has scores of vacation and weekend getaway homes, but lacks lodging. Look for a place to stay 10 kilometers to the south in Maitencillo or in Zapallar.
