Safety in vina del mar

By Noleen Turner

Viña del Mar is generally a safe city, but opportunistic theft does occur. Carry your backpack on your chest. It is not uncommon for thieves to target tourists waiting at traffic lights or at a busy road junction. They will open your rucksack and help themselves to whatever they can get hold of.

There are also a number of tricksters operating along the beachfront. This infamous group of women will approach you with the pretense of wanting a light for their cigarette. They will proceed to tell your fortune, offer you prayers and then steal your money. You will recognize them by their long flowery skirts, hoop earrings and headscarves. Run away.
