Mapuche stronghold and site of a famous battle between the indigenous people and the Spanish, Cañete is home to an excellent Mapuche museum and is definitely a good place to get close to the Mapuche culture, away from the main tourist crowd. This small town was one of the first founded by the conquistadors in 1557, until then and until this day it was and is the home to the Lafkenches clan of the Mapuches. The remains of the town’s fortifications have been landscaped into a pleasant walk among its cannon emplacements.
