Valle Chacabuco - Other Activity Cochrane - Chile

Conservación Patagonia, a non-profit organization, is working to protect 173,000 acres of Patagonian steppe in Valle Chacabuco. With the help of biologists, the environment is being restored to its original balance so the significant South Andean deer, (huemul) population can rebound. This former sheep estancia stretches across Valle Chacabuco, from Reserva Nacional Tamango to Reserva Nacional Lago Jeínemeni. Conservación Patagonia’s proposal to the Chilean government is that this land will be donated, if the three reserves are merged together to form a new national park, Parque Nacional Patagonia. Already the organization is building a visitors center, hiking trails, campsites and other infrastructure.
