Puerto Río Tranquilo Getting To and Away

Puerto Río Tranquilo is 233 kilometers (145 mi) south of Coyhaique and 97 kilometers (60 mi) north of Cochrane. South of Río Tranquilo the Carretera Austral has some steep climbs and tight curves. An Esso gas station is right on the highway; the town also has mechanic and tire repair shops.

During the low season, bus service is less frequent. Rains or snows can temporary close the road at any time of the year. There is no center bus terminal. These are the depots for each of the companies:

Buses Don Carlos – from Hospedaje Silvana (Godoy, between Exploradores and Arrayanes)

Bus Eca – from Supermercado El Chino (Godoy 64)

Sao Paulo and Acuario 13 – stop along the Carretera Austral

Sabra – from Donde Kike (Godoy 25)

To Puerto Guadal: Bus Eca (Tuesday, Friday 1 p.m., $8)

To Chile Chico: Transportes Ale (Wednesday, Thursday 10:30 a.m., $20)

To Cochrane: 2 hours – Sao Paulo and Acuario 13 (daily 2 p.m., $14), Sabra (Monday, Thursday, Saturday 11:30 a.m., $14), Don Carlos (Saturday, Monday, Thursday 2:30 p.m., $10)

To Coyhaique: 5 hours – Sao Paulo and Acuario 13 (daily noon, $14), Don Carlos (Tuesday, Friday Sunday 11:30 a.m., $13), Sabra (Wednesday, Friday, Sunday 11:30 a.m., $14)
