Unlike most South American countries, Chile experiences four distinct seasons: winter (June to August), spring (September to November), summer (December to February), and autumn (March to May).
Generalizing the country’s overall climate can be tricky, as it varies significantly across the long and narrow land, but is basically comparable to a Mediterranean climate through the central area, with wider temperature brackets in the southernmost and northernmost parts.
Temperatures range throughout the year from highs of 30 degrees C (86 degrees F) to lows of -1 degrees C (30 degrees F). Rainfall is most abundant in the central and southern areas, during autumn and winter months (May is the wettest), and wind, rain and snow are dependable daily occurrences in Tierra del Fuego and Chilean Patagonia. Summers in Santiago and beyond are hot but pleasant, as humidity is low, and winter around the country is perfect for outdoor adventures such as snowboarding and skiing.
