Taxis in Chile are an easy way to get around cities and towns. In most places, Chilean taxis are metered and the rates are displayed on the window. Major cities and towns that see a lot of tourists tend to have the priciest cabs, and there is typically a surcharge tacked on to the fare at night and on Sundays. In a few of Chile's smaller cities, taxis are not metered and you will have to negotiate a fare with the driver before you depart; if you can, ask a local about the going rate for your trip. This is also the case when you charter a cab in Chile or take a trip outside town.
Many cities also have shared taxis called colectivos which function in much the same way as buses, with fixed routes and fares. Chilean colectivos are often faster than buses, but are marginally more expensive and can be quite cramped. They can usually be hailed on the street or at designated stops, and they have their routes and fares prominently displayed. In a few places in the north of Chile, they also provide intercity transportation.
