International Chile Buses

There are a number of ways to travel to Chile by bus:

  • Long-range buses link Santiago to the major cities in South America, though the cross-continental journeys are painfully long.
  • Crossing from Peru into Chile, the only open route is the one between Tacna and Arica, which is well-traveled.
  • From Bolivia to Chile, the easiest route with public transport is along the paved La Paz-Arica highway.
  • Several bus routes link Chile and Argentina; among those of particular interest to visitors are the ones linking Calama with Salta in the north, Santiago with Mendoza, Osorno in the Lakes District with Bariloche, and Punta Arenas with Río Gallegos in Patagonia.
  • See Chile Border Crossings for details on driving into Chile by private vehicle.
