Museums in Chile - Activity Info. - Chile

Santiago is museum-central. The Museo Histórico Nacional, formerly the Supreme Court and Congress, has something for everyone, while the Museo de Arte Precolombino showcases the Chilean and Andean past. The busy Museo de Santiago reveals the city's history through art, clothing, photos, and maps, and children will love the popular new Museo Interactivo Mirador, with its many hands-on exhibits and interactive activities. Don't miss the paintings, sculptures, and international exhibitions of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, which shares space with the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo.

In northern Chile, Arica's clifftop Museo Histórico y de Armas is a tribute to the War of the Pacific, and the Museo Ferroviario de Arica will fascinate train enthusiasts. Nearly 400,000 regional artifacts, as well as gold and mummies fill the Museo Gustavo le Paige in San Pedro de Atacama. In Vicuña, the museum of Nobel Prize-winning poet Gabriela Mistral contains memorabilia from her life.

To learn about Chile's independence, visit Talca's Museo O'Higginiano y Bellas Artes de Talca. Pablo Neruda is the focus of several museums in Chile, including Valparaíso's La Sebastiana and Isla Negra–chock-a-block with nautical gadgetry. Villarrica's Museo Arqueológico Municipal and Museo de Leandro Penchulef richly detail the area's immigrant and indigenous history, and Temuco's Museo Nacional Ferroviario Pablo Neruda is an excellent tribute to the late poet and Chile's railroad history.

There are many museums in and around Valdivia, like the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo and the Cervezaría de Kuntsmann and Museo de la Cerveza, where you can learn about Chilean brewing history while enjoying a beer. In Hanga Roa on Easter Island, Museum Sebastián Englert's artifacts attempt to unravel the mystery of Rapa Nui. The museums in Punta Arenas are highly regarded; learn about the life in Patagonia in years past at the Museo Regional de Magallanes. Other museums are dedicated to naval, military and brewing history. For a comprehensive history of Tierra del Fuego, visit the Museo Provincial Fernando Cordero Rusque in Porvenir.
