Markets are a great way to get a whiff and taste of Chilean life, and none so much as specialized markets.
Mercado Central is a major draw in Chile’s capital city, Santiago. The initial smell is perhaps a little overwhelming, as dozens of stalls of locals selling fish attempt to entice both foreigners and residents alike. Good lunch options can be found at the many restaurants within the market. Open 6 a.m. – 4 p.m. Sun-Thu, 6 a.m. - 6 p.m. Sat.
Mercado Franklin, the largest persa, or flea market in Chile, can be found at and around Bio-Bio Street in Santiago. Specializing in precious antiques, furniture, private copies of music and software, the market is open Saturdays and Sundays, 9 a.m. – mid-afternoon.
Pueblo Los Dominicos is built on the grounds of a Dominican monastery and exhibits the works of over 200 artisans. Ceramics, knitwear and jewellery can all be found here, among other crafts. There are also many café bars in which to spend a few hours. Open daily from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.. Avenida Apoquindo 9085, Las Condes, Santiago.
