Both a province and commune of Chile, Easter Island is administratively attached to the country’s V Region, that of Valparaíso. Sharing political power over the island (plus the inhabited islets of Salas y Gómez 380km away) are a provincial governor, appointed by the President of the Republic, and a six-person municipal council. But following years of demands for greater autonomy by the Rapa Nui community, the constitutional reform of 2007 granted Easter Island the status of “special territory,” which has yet to come into force.
