Crime is virtually non-existent on the island. Nonetheless, it is best not tempt anyone by leaving your bags unattended or your car door unlocked. Also avoid touching any of the unique statues or climbing on the ahus, both in the interest of preservation and as a sign of consideration towards the islanders who take respect to the ancestors seriously. When heading out for the day, take gear for all types of weather. Since Easter Island is a tiny piece of land in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, clouds can get blown in very fast and storms whip fiercely if you happen to be in an elevated position. But the sun can also beat down pretty hard, especially since there are so few trees providing shade, so you'll need sunblock and a hat. Also do not forget to carry enough water for the more strenuous walks, as there are very few places to get fresh water outside of the main town.
