Once you take a step outside the boundaries of Hanga Roa you are in the national park, since Rapa Nui is a World Heritage site. There are nearly no services in the park, no hotels, no restaurants, not even toilets! The exception is a kiosk at Anakena Beach. Atop Rano Kau at Orongo a Conaf cabin sits sentry and some park rangers are available to dish out information. Besides this you will need to take everything you need with you for your trip, including a suitable bag for trash.
Without a doubt the highlights are, well… everything! Marvel at the Moai, the ceremonial platforms they stand on, the petrogylphs, the magnetic rock, and the bird man cave paintings, the volcanoes and their lava tubes or even just the ocean. You’ll awe at the sheer sense of isolation you get as you stand on top of a volcano in the middle of the deep blue Pacific Ocean.
