Flower hunting

Location:
Huasco, Chile

Other Activity Types:
National park (flora)

By Zenan Delaney

Just North of Huasco, in the south of the Atacama Desert, is the Llanos de Challe National Park. Those who visit in late September, October and sometimes early November, will witness the the desert in vibrant bloom. This spectacle is a kaleidescope of flora like no other in the world.

The "Garra de Leon" (Lions Paw) is a particular highlight of the park. This unique flower only grows in this unique and isolated location. In fact, many of the 278 plant varieties in the park are indigenous to this region of Chile.

To see the best of the park, hire a vehicle. Using Huasco as a base, you can venture into the interior and hunt flowers across the Southern Atacama. While in Huasco, try the Olives. They are a local specialty.

Remember, it is illegal to pick the flowers. It is also important to stick to the paths so as not to damage the fragile environment. For information, visit the park ranger’s cabin located in the center of the park.
