When to go
Puerto Varas is a summer destination resort. The main high season is from December - early March, offering warm and friendly weather, although don’t be surprised to get rain from time to time. The town expands its loosely held borders during these months, stretching out into neighboring villages of Frutillar, Llanquihue and Ensenada. It literally becomes a festive tourist town during high season, with all excursions and activities operational seven days a week. There are also festivals celebrating the founding of Puerto Varas in the end of January, as well as music and art festivals in February. The issue is finding a place to stay and eat, therefore making reservations is a must do.
If it is more important to have some peace and quiet during your vacation then visit the area during off-season from late March - November (March and November offer the best weather). During this period the locals are a bit more congenial and there are no lines to wait in. There are still enough activities and excursions during this time of year to keep it exciting, but some places do close down or have siesta hours. Be sure to visit the tourism office located at San Fransisco 431 in the Municipality building to learn about hours and open operations during the off season.
