Zoológico Nacional

Location:
Calle Pio Nono
Bellavista, Santiago, Chile

City Park Types:
Natural park, garden, Zoo

By Shanie Matthews

Lions, tigers and bears! Oh my! In addition to these three animals, the Zoológico  Nacional  of  Santiago  features  150  other species. This well-maintained habitat for wild animals of the world is situated within 4.8 hectares (11.8 acres) of the base of Cerro San Cristobal, just beyond the Funicular. The entire park overlooks the city and allows for spectacular views on a clear day. The diversity of the animals is very impressive. The presentations in the amphitheater educate the guests as well as allow them to become more intimate with the animals. There is also a “Zoocine”, a small indoor movie theater that is entertaining for the kids. There are cement and dirt paths leading you to all of the different sites. The trails are in a bit of disrepair, so be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes. Also, this would not be a good excursion for those with walking problems due to its location on the side of a steep hill. Allow about two hours to enjoy the entire park.
