Cementerio General, Santiago’s most famous cemetery, was established in 1820 by Bernardo O’Higgins. All of Chile’s Presidents are buried in here, except for Gabriel González Videla and Augusto Pinochet. One of the most visited graves is that of former President Salvador Allende. He was originally buried in Viña del Mar, but in the 1990s his body was exhumed and he was given a ceremonial burial in Cementerio General. The cemetery also has a memorial to the thousands who “disappeared” under Pinochet’s regime.
The cemetery covers an area of more than 85 hectares in downton Recoleta. The lovely landscaped gardens are filled with numerous sculptures and ostentatious mausoleums.
