The Museo de Santiago is located just off the Plaza de Armas in Casa Colorada, an 18th century colonial mansion. The house, now a national monument, was built in 1769 and is one of the few remaining examples of a pre-colonial home in the city. Inside, the museum exhibits a collection of ceramics, letters, costumes, carriages, photos, maps and models that chart the history of Santiago from pre-Columbian times to the establishment of the Republic. Some of the displays look a bit like school art projects, but if you’re interested in the history of the city it’s worth checking out. The museum is generally packed with tourists and school children.
