Founded in 1880, The Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (National Fine Arts Museum) is an essential stop for art-lovers. It’s housed in the Palacio de Bellas Artes, which was designed by Emilio Jéquier in the style of Paris’s Petit Palais. Neoclassical, with art nouveau features, it was declared a national monument in 1976. The museum has a permanent collection of paintings and sculptures by European and Chilean artists and regularly hosts exhibits by contemporary international artists.
The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, on the other side of the building, is run by the art faculty of the Universidad de Chile. It holds a collection of modern photography, sculpture, and web art displays.
If you only have time to visit one museum or art gallery, go to Bellas Artes.
