Just a few steps from Mercado Central, La Piojera (the flea) is one of the most infamous bars in Santiago. It’s been around for almost 100 years and got its name when a local nobleman left the place in disgust, saying it was full of fleas. La Piojera is still a dive, and serves mediocre Chilean food, but people come here in droves for the lively atmosphere and impromptu sing-a-longs. Don’t leave without trying a terremoto, a mixture of sweet white wine and ice cream. This is not the safest area in the city, so you’re better off visiting the bar during the day.
